Chapter Nineteen

Brianna

What in the world am I doing?

I should be at the office, looking at samples of carpets, buying furniture, and probably calling an exterminator because the property at Lake Champlain is infested with mosquitoes and bats.

Nothing against bats, I think they’re somehow cute—from afar and in children’s books. However, I doubt the guests would like to share a bedroom with Batman. We don’t need a review on Yelp saying: the chocolate on the pillow was great, the bat flapping around my room at night made the stay feel Dracula-ish.

Instead of worrying about my properties, I’m doing a walkthrough of Luna Harbor. This town reminds me of one of those old western movies where only a few people are around, and most businesses are closed.

Lang doesn’t need me to breathe life into this. This has been dead for years.

Just move on, people. There’s nothing to see here.

Is the town pretty? Yes, and I’m sure it had a nice personality back in the day. When we arrive at the inn, I almost cry. It’s beautiful but… I hope nobody stays here. They should close the building and demolish it or call an engineer to fix the structural damage.

I finally glance at Nando, who’s been quiet, and say, “You don’t want my help. You want me to perform some ritual to bring this place back to its former glory.”

He shrugs. “As I mentioned a few times, it needs some help.”

I scoff. “Some?”

We walk around the inn. There’s a beautiful garden and a pergola that could be replaced. I point. “That’s a great place for weddings. If you build the new inn on that other side and add a pool and a patio there, it’ll complete the aesthetic without destroying the view.”

I tap my chin a couple of times, looking around. “You can organize small conferences, retreats, I…destination weddings.”

Nando steps closer and whispers, “If you open an event planning company in Seattle…”

“Event management,” I correct. “They’re now called event management companies, and I don’t have the time to entertain nonsense. Shall I remind you I have a business to run on the other side of the Mississippi?”

He shoves his hands inside his pockets. “I just can’t understand why you keep wanting to do something you hate. It’s madness. Sorry to say this out loud, but it’s over. They’re gone, and sacrificing your life and dreams won’t bring them back.”

I hug myself, closing my eyes. “Don’t you think I know that?”

Seconds later, Nando is the one holding me. I rest my head on his chest, snuggling closer to him. This is what I’ve missed since he moved to Luna Harbor. We went so long without seeing each other that I was feeling empty. I should work on my dependency on him. As we grow older, we’re growing apart.

“My comment wasn’t meant to hurt you. I just…”

“He stopped caring the moment he lost her. Nothing else mattered, not even his daughter. Ever since I was six, it’s been just me, and I doubt that’ll ever change.
